My doctor traded this banjo for some computing favors a few years back. I cleaned it, replaced the head, added Waverly V2 pegs, set it up, and then sold it to fund the purchase of my Woodsong. It sounded pretty good when was finished in spite of the fact that I used it to experiment with my setup skills.
I made repairs at the neck joint. Looking at the photo below, you'll notice that the coordinator rod bears directly on the rim; in fact, it had already crushed the wood. I inserted a washer to prevent the wood from being crushed but I also had to trim about 3/16" off the tail end of the rod to prevent it from interfering with the tailpiece. The washer under the upper neck nut was touching the tone ring. I routed out a small area to seat the washer. The neck's heel had been cut badly; I made shims. The result was a perfectly round rim, a tight neck fit, and good action.
The doctor also owns a Gold Star. He has a tweed case he likes better than the case that came with the Gold Star, so he gave me the case. I sold that to a Gold Star afficianado who wanted another original case.
