Web Development

xSuite

FrontPage was a nice, simple name for Microsoft's Web site editing tool. The new name, Expression Web, is not as compelling (which is saying something). Neither do I like Expression Blend, Expression Design, and Expression Media.

I noticed some participants in several online forums referring to the products as, for example, EXWeb. Then I saw a shorter form, xWeb. Ultimately I learned that the shortened form is in common use at Microsoft itself.

If you hear about xSuite, xWeb, xMedia, et. al., you'll know what it means.

Expression Suite Now Available

The suite version of Microsoft Expression is now available for purchase from a wide variety of retailers. The suite includes four products in the Expression family - Web, Blend, Design, and Media (formerly iView Multimedia Pro) plus a training DVD from Total Training, long famous for its extensive repertoire of Adobe training videos.

I was surprised to learn that Expression Design, Microsoft's first foray into serious, artistic drawing tools, would not be sold alone. It is only available in the suite.

Expression Web in General Release

Microsoft Expression Web is now available for purchase from a wide variety of retailers. The deal at Amazon.com continues to be attractive.  Other Expression components (Blend, Design) are scheduled to ship this year. Details.

Expression Media, formerly iView Multimedia's MediaPro 3, is not yet in Microsoft colors.  Those who purchase MediaPro now will receive a free upgrade when the Microsoft version is ready.

Expression Web Designer

I am impressed with EWD, especially its "dynamic Web template" system that first appeared on FrontPage 2003. FrontPage users will not be disappointed.

Update, June 8 - I successfully designed, developed, and deployed a Web site using Microsoft Expression Web Designer (CTP1). I look forward to the final product.

Expression Web Designer

Yesterday Microsoft released one of its "community technology previews" (CTP) for Expression Web Designer, the successor to Front Page.

The initial download was flawed and would not install.  Microsoft closed the download page last night with a promise to have it back online this morning.

Web Designer is an important product for Microsoft.  FrontPage is dated; Web Designer promises to tightly adhere to standards.
