e-Waste
I just heard this term coined to describe data left on computers being disposed. It is apt.
My clients are usually small enough that they don't have Sarbanes-Oxley or Gramm-Leach-Bliley concerns. However, disposing of media (hard disks, recordable optical discs) without considering their contents is a mistake for a company of any size.
It's an extra step, but be sure to thoroughly wipe all hard disks and physically destroy all CDs and DVDs before disposing of them.
